In the past I have cut the little tab off, ordered more ink, that took 3days to land and was still printing fine

Personally I would go with Oracal 651 (MDP) it's not a low tack but comes off easy with a little heat, Used this one cars/vans and also used it for temp jobs like red nose days etc...

100% No as you will need to flush the cheap ink out of the lines to get the "good" ink through, Yes ...

Before you changed the carts, was it printing OK? or did you buy it with no carts fitted?
