Does using dye sublimation gel invalidate the manufacturers warranty

I'm told by Sawgrass that this is the case yes. Mine went back to Ricoh and I had to keep quiet about its use.

That does not sound good.Lot of money to risk if Ricoh discover its not there ink.

It's the same with every printer manufacturer. As soon as you put in non-genuine ink, and they know this, then they'll invalidate the warranty. I've even had a customer report that Epson invalidate their warranty because they weren't using genuine Epson paper
