I've finally gotten around to trying out mug paper, but can't figure out how to fool the printer into printing borderless for custom cut 230mm x 98mm paper.

I've tried your method, but it's not quite right for me. The only bit which isn't edge to edge is the top bit with a 2.5mm gap. My image placement was different too.

My design template is 220 x 97mm for full top to bottom printing on an 11oz mug.

The printer is the Epson L805.

Do you have settings for 11oz mugs?

And what is the purpose of reducing the image to 80%?

So, first of all, there is a lot of trial and error to get the paper printing edge to edge without printing over each side. It sounds like your image is too far down the page on whatever software you are using. Try nudging up 1mm and see if that works. It will mopst likely be different for each set up (especially if you are using different size paper) and will depend on things like software also.

The reason for an 80% reduction on the page size is how you are able to print edge to edge. You will see in my second image that the page size is set to 240x90 (which is the page size I use in Coreldraw. I design my mug at full size (or take a customer's artwork) and once good at full size I then reduce it down and position as shown in image 1.

WHen I go into settings I tell the printer the page size is 240x90 (set up a user defined page) but tell the printer I am printing on an A4 sheet and to enlarge to fit to page and centre. This way the printer thinks there is an A4 page loaded in the back tray, takes it and starts printing. If you print too big it will spurt ink on the bottom of the tray bed (which you fo not want) so testing with thin black lines until it is spot on is key.
