yellow marks near handle around edges of paper and tape

i'm printing mugs in halogen oven and I'm liking the print quality especially near the handles but I've noticed I'm getting yellow marks where the heat transfer paper sits and a vertical stripe where the edge of the paper lies. I'm using the sub paper plus a couple of sheets of copier paper to protect the wrap. Has anyone had similar and know how to prevent.

Are there any scorch marks on your paper when removed? Maybe your oven is a little too hot, or maybe you are cooking them for a bit too long. It's a bit trial and error getting these right, but once you have the right settings you shouldn't need to alter them.

I have an oven thermometer inside my halogen oven to act as a guide ...

thanks webtrekker, the paper is a bit yellow ish, but if I cut the time then the colours aren't coming out fully, i will go down a bit with the temp. The dial on my halogen is terrible for getting any kind of accuracy but I did order one of these thermometers so I'm glad you reminded me I'll dig it out

I used to have this problem - I think it's just rogue ink gas in the oven. Solved it by cutting the paper slightly longer and 'breaking' it over the handles as shown below so the full mug is covered. I also find I have to let the paper go a bit yellow with heat to get full transfer without any faded patches. Not a problem unless it goes really brown!

I don't use Halogen ovens but I do use a bigger oven and wraps.

The only time I have had marks is when I have cut the paper too short. My mug paper is cut to 105 deep by 240mm wide. This means the paper sits right up against the handle and most importantly beyond the end of the silicon wrap. I do not use any blank paper to "protect" the silicon, but then I normally chuck them in the oven every couple of weeks at a higher temp to burn off any left over ink.

Also, if printing a full bleed top and bottom, I only print about 2mm more than the height of the mug. This will reduce the amount of excess gas floating around inside your oven which will eventually stick to an exposed area of your mug.

I've gone down 12degrees and the problem isn't as bad, just where the heat tape sits now. I'm wondering about the heat tape, if it is poor quality, I bought it off ebay, do you get much better quality tape when you buy from the sublimation shops or is it the same stuff?

I personally do not cut to shape like SciArt, and I am not sure that is required as I haven't seen other halogen users say they have to do that, having said that, if it works then great

Preparation should not be an issue for you, the only difference between oven and mug press is that the oven needs a silicon wrap which is seconds to put on.

I haven't noticed any real difference in the quality of heat tape from various suppliers. I have never purchased of ebay, but see no reason as to why it wouldn't be OK, Also, if the marks are burnt into the mug it has to be rogue ink or a naff coating. Tape residue would sit on top of the mug surface.

If reducing the temp has improved things then it is most likely that a bit more tweaking with the time and temp and you will hopefully be sorted.

I cut my mug paper here from A4. I get two mug sheets per A4 sheet.

Much as SG, I get two wraps from an A4 sheet (landscape) , which I trim to size. I can't remember exact dimensions as I print crop marks to use when I guillotine the wraps. However, my wraps are the height of the mug and virtually touch the handle.

I don't use any other covering over the transfer other than the silicone wrap itself. Try a new silicone wrap. It may be that the edges of the silicone, nearest the clamps, have picked up some stray particles. It happened to me once, but my marks were grey, not yellow.

No need to throw it away. Mine get "grubby" all the time, all I do is turn my oven up to the maximum temp and throw the wraps in there for 20 minutes. They come out spotless. Hold your breath when opening the oven though. There is a lot of sublimation gas floating around depending on how many wraps you are cleaning.

I cut my sub paper into 3 sheets and the tape has always been fine in the heat press, i suppose it's much cooler near the handle so its not been a problem although it should e good to very high temps. The marks are definitely from the tape as they are the same shape in the same place and yellow-ish like the tape, it is not residue i've tried to get the marks off with acetone and they don't budge. I don't think my oven has much residue ink as its quite new and all my prints have been well sealed with the extra paper and wrap and the marks are where the tape is rather than around it. I'll try printing 2 per sheet instead as suggested. Thanks again for the help.
