Halogen mug oven ... first impressions ...

I have used a halogen oven for years - I found early on that I needed to use the extender ring to prevent scorching as it moves the intense heat further away from the mugs. I find 4 mugs take 20 minutes (though this is currently a bit variable as I think the thermostat on mine is on the way out so will replace the oven in the new year).
Try the extender ring to see if this prevents scorching.

Ok. I've done a test with 3 mugs in the oven and, I have to be honest here, results were disappointing. The reason was because, when I placed all 3 mugs into the oven, the temperature dropped way down to 150 deg C on my thermometer, so I waited until it had risen to around 180 then timed the process for 15 minutes, which I thought should be about adequate for the 3 mugs.

All 3 were scorched, and the blacks were brown. So, I need to make more tests, but they will be after Christmas as I don't want to deplete my supply of mugs too much at the moment.

Oh no, that is disappointing.

My sleeves should be here in the next week or so, so I will have a play myself, ut with just 1 mug at a time lol initially.

Im absolutely positive you will get there with this - you always seem to get the results you want.

Yes, I just bring it up to temp and then 20 minutes from then, no waiting for it to come back up to temp. But as I said it can vary a bit (probably due to dodgy thermostat). If you cut your paper the way that I do so that it overhangs the top of the mug a bit once clamped you can tell by the way this darkens when the mugs are going to start to scorch. But the extender ring should help loads.

You need to be a bit careful with halogen when you measure temperature because of the way that halogen heat works.

Halogen lamps heat up solid objects and not the air like normal ovens. This means your mugs will heat up quicker than the surrounding air temperature and your thermometer will measure 180C only after the mugs have heated up the air to the correct temperature.

I tend to start the timing once I put the mugs in because the mugs will start warming once the halogen lamp comes on.

20 minutes for 4 mugs, I make sure the handles point in the middle and there is plenty of room for air flow. I always use an extender ring.

After following this thread I went and bought a halogen oven from Amazon. £28. Set it up with the extender and every mug perfect. 4 mugs at 180 for 15 minutes. The oven is 1300w. Gonna buy another couple now. Thanks for the thread.
