No mention so far regarding screen calibration, peeing in the wind if this has not been done. Others have tried in the past to solve screen/print differences by playing with canned profiles, it just does not work and is the wrong approach to colour correction. Workflow should be in aRGB throughout, sRGB will limit the available colours and Pro Photo has too many. The combination of screen calibration, icc profile for your printer/paper combination (ask Paul) and aRGB will solve the problems.

Most people have the screen brightness up high which is the biggest reason for dark prints, despite my screen being calibrated I also have it set higher than recommended, for comfortable viewing (old eyes) but compensate by dialling in additional brightness to each print. In photoshop it is just an adjustment layer, Lightroom has a print brightness compensation slider/checkbox in the print dialogue for this very reason and you can leave it set after determining what the level should be.

Update: I had a video call with Sawgrass today (great customer support) who went through all of my settings from the beginning.

Seems that my ICC profile wasn't loading properly - powerdriver is still not working with the right colouring so sticking with the Ricoh print option instead using the Sawgrass ICC winfile.

Also calibrated my screen.

Now... is there an easier way to flip images in print settings or is it a case of going into Photoshop / Edit Canvas?

Thanks everyone:)

photoshop use the emulsion up option to flip. Also if any image is CMYK and you change to RGB you just change the colours to the rgb rendition of the cmyk colour which will be flat. Your need to design in rgb or change colours once youve converted to rgb to make them more vibrant. IE instead of CMYK red of 0 100 100 0, you may need to change ro RGB of 255 0 0 for example

Thanks Mags, I have tried this but can't find how to remove the ICC profile. ill be honest, im at my wit's end and running out of ideas. Im wasting mugs / paper in the process. Would anyone knlw knows what they are doing at all be free to go into a webinar or talk through to help me out, or point me in the direction of another board member?

Any help you could offer would be greatly appreciated. I am now using Illustrator BTW but its just giving me the same issues as Photoshop.

Nick

Thanks

Hi Nick,

When you say remove ICC Profile, do you mean within PS?

To restore preferences quickly using a keyboard shortcut: Press and hold Alt+Control+Shift (Windows) or Option+Command+Shift (Mac OS) as you start Photoshop. You are prompted to delete the current settings. The new preferences files are created the next time you start Photoshop.

This is how i resolved multiple issues when i had changed so many different settings i couldn't work out what was meant to be default anymore.

I had a lengthly webinar with Mags last night (cheers mate!) about my set up. Despite all his efforts i am STILL having colour issues, this has been the case from the very beginning.

I have attached a photo which shows the BMS precut paper appearing much darker than what is on my screen. when i sublimate onto the mug, i can barely make out the tartan that it looks nearly black. I can confirm that the tartan is part of an image, so will this be an issue when printing (out of gamut?)?

If so, then i really am wasting my time and would be best to stay away from tartan "images" altogether and work only with tartan vectors. Or, is there another way i can beef up the image so that it resembles what is on my screen. I have calibrated, and am working off both powerdriver and printer options (don't see any major difference in print) - i have also cranked my heat up by 10oc for another 30 seconds, no change in colour. For the record, i am printing out watercolour designs and they seem to be perfect, its the dark colours that are giving me the headache.

I am confusing myself with this now....

Using Illustrator.

I have went into PROOF SETUP
Selected PRO-PHOTO RGB
Ticked "Preserve RGB colours" which completely changes the design colour scheme.... As it happens i really like the amended colour scheme (much more vibrant than when it is deselected, or i am using any other colour scheme (RGB, SRGB)

So... How so can i now configure and implement going forward so that when i print onto sublimation paper, my image comes out looking like PRO PHOTO RGB, or as close to it as can be? Because when i go to print (after selecting this option) my image still comes out dark - It is as if Illustrator is not accepting that i want to use ProPhoto.

I am not ready to give up on this yet, there HAS to be a solution:)

You can see the difference... I want to have the brighter printer off onto Sublimination paper (checked the Preserve RGB colours box)
