I have an epson 1500w and a ricoh SG3110, they both get a hammering everyday and perform faultlessly. Ricoh is on sawgrass inks and is about 4 years old, Epson is a year old on Sublinova. So I guess it shows it's luck of the draw.
OR
The more heavily they are used the better they are.

Without a doubt you need to keep the epson 1500w running or otherwise it will block with ink, probably because the sawgrass inks are water based but on the sg400 they are gel.

Ok and you are using a CISS system with ArTainium ink ? Also, can the 1500W print on sublimation film ?

The ricoh is fine, the epson is better for printing photos on high quality substrates.
Mugs get banged through the ricoh on sawgrass inks using powerdriver.
The epson is on a ciss with sublinova inks and icc's for individual substrates.
I am printing my own designs on mugs on the ricoh which are not high density coverage, and the carts last for ages.

UPDATE: it was a dithering problem, Sawgrass finally offered to replace my SG 400 free of charge.
