and you wonder why i got grey hair

customer orders case....uploaded pic after about 2 days....
with instructions -

"I would like this image printed on my case. It’s fine to cut off the sides to make it fit, but I would like the couple to be not cropped and slightly off center as they are in the photo."

here is the image.....simple enough to crop for an iphone 4/4s.....

this is what we done below - bar in mind what they requested above -
"It’s fine to cut off the sides to make it fit, but I would like the couple to be not cropped and slightly off center as they are in the photo."

this is the email we got this morning -

"Hi, I received my case today, thank you for shipping it so quickly.

The photo on it isn’t quite right. I said I didn’t mind cropping it to get it to the right shape for an iPhone case, but what I received is an overly cropped image that misses out 20% of the top of the photo, 25% of the left side and ~10% off the right side. It was only really necessary to crop a small amount off the sides to make the photo fit correctly.

Could you please print me a replacement?"

WTH ?....aint getting bugger all replacement - pic was placed fine and print was perfect....asked them to send it back if not happy....but we done what they wanted
when the new rules come in this august on ebay and also the forced manged returns(we pay) as well., think we will have had enough of ebay....

When it comes to mugs/phone covers etc, I always *always* send the customer a graphical proof of the item for them to approve before anything goes into production. That way the onus is on them if they don't like it.

we normally do that as well if the pic we think pic looks dodgy or we gonna have some problem with it fitting case.....but this was straight forward what they wanted and the pic was decent enough quality...no brainier....onto case and away....
oh and BBL is a def with this one

and to send proof with every single case - we done that at the start when it was not so busy....great, but we cant do it now as it to bloody busy...and it means you got orders sitting there for days sometimes before customer gets back to you...so you end up with backlog of orders waiting for approval....and some dont even come back at all....so we do it this way...if the pic looks iffy quality wise, or it aint gonna fit without chopping heads off ect, we contact customer....if pic quality and placement look fine to us....out is goes......some people you just cant please...and you are in the same market. so you will know where i,m coming from

Before you re print it,ask the customer for the copyright permission on the image so you can actually use the image legally. If they say they dont have it then you cant re print it ,its a stand of with the customer

I'm afraid nowt gets printed without a pdf proof being signed off - no exceptions.

Agreed but that will end up with negative feedback so BigJ loses.

Personally BIGJ, while I am in 100% agreement with you, I would simply print the case, post it out and chalk it up as one to remember, better things to concentrate on (like more sales etc) than worrying about some pleb and his illegal photo. He will not own the copyright to a Alfred Eisenstaedt photo who only died a few years ago.

why not to use my designer BigJ?
put responsibility on the customers so they can crop it as they like it :)

I don't sell on ebay and have only done phone cases for family at the moment, the insert style. Any photos they have asked me to do I have just re-sized it to fit the insert unless they have said they just wanted a certain part of the photo.

I think that your customer may have thought that you would fit the whole picture onto the case and that it may have required some slight cropping to fit.

I have to say that what you have done looks great though.
Many thanks
Iain

Equipment used A4 Ricoh printer, HP3085 Heat Press Graphtec cutter, Jarin mug press, CJV 30-60 solvent printer and lots of help from DSF.

The only thing I can see is I consider the right side to be a bit too closely cropped (might just be the photo though) to the chaps back so that might just be what peed off your customer. I think the image in Paul's reply looks about right.

Speaking as a printer I would have included more of the background as it communicates what is actually happening in the photograph. It's more than a photo of two people embracing. The customer did appear to have a creative head on them.
