Business Insurance - Sublimation = Manufacture??

I run an online business and have my own unit. I have had business insurance with the NFU for the last three years. I called them to increase my policy to cover my new sublimation equipment, only to be told that I'm now a 'manufacturer' rather than a 'retailer' because I am altering products. Therefore, I need to be on a (more expensive) manufacturers insurance policy.

I tried to argue that I wasn't actually 'altering' products just adding images on them - the basic product ie mug was staying the same. But that didn't wash with them. Supposedly, I now need to be covered for the 'activity of changing items'. I need indemity if the ink comes off one my mugs rubs into the customer's hands and poisons them??!!!


This has massively increased my premium by about 30%:frown: Can anyone recommend another business insurer (the NFU are totally useless) or advise if this is true...

I asked this question a while back as I was getting extortionate quotes, I was recommended www.blackfriarsgroup.com/ who gave me a very competitive quote for contents, public liability & product liability, business interuptions, and employer liability, (buildings is already included in my lease) they beat my cheapest quote by over £400. The only reason I didn't take it up with them is Natwest had promised to beat my best quote, and they did by £1. (Not alot I know but its a pound better off in my pocket)

There was no mention of a pacific manufacturer's policy but It covers me for £3 million product liability, on all products I produce eg canvas, mugs, phone cases etc. It was explained fully to all insurance companies I got quotes with what we do and what we produce but nothing was ever mentioned about a manufacturer's policy just the product liability.

That's really interesting - the NFU were adament I have to change from a 'retail' to 'manufacturer' policy to cover the liability with sublimation products. I bank with NW, so will give them a call and see what they say. Maybe it's just the way the NFU works?!

I'm with Blackfriars and as TJ has said, they are very very cheap. Beat my previous years quotes by over £300.00
Proof in the pudding is when you have a problem, but in 10 years i've never had to use the insurance cover.

We bank with Natwest too, their first quote was one of the most expensive but when I told them what Blackfriars had quoted they put me on hold and phoned the underwriters, they then told me they would beat the other quote and they could also wave the £39 admin fee and let me pay monthly interest free so its well worth getting a few quotes before calling them. Their reason for being able to offer a massive discount is: 'You are a loyal valued customer who has various personal and business accounts with Natwest'
