Updating Opencart Version

Just tried to update to the latest version and had all sorts of issues Luckily I made a full backup via FTP and managed to put it back to its previous state. Might be something to do with a custom template installed.

I've been looking at a new template theme and wondered about starting a new install for my store with this template, latest OC version. Is it possible to import all of my existing product data in? I see a few add in modules that say they can do this but wonder how effective they are?
