Where to buy photos for print?

Hi there,

A customer has come to me wanting 50 phone cases with one direction photo printed onto them...

I have informed them that this is not allowed, unless they have the rights to the image.

So, my question to you guys is... where can I buy an image of One Direction, that is okay to print for commercial use?

If he's buying 50 then it seems obvious that he'll be selling them on, if he caught so will you be. Its to risky. But I could be wrong

I wouldn't touch this with a barge pole personally. I'm sure you could look towards a licensing agreement to print such photos but costs would be astronomical.

Something I learnt a long while back is you have to know when to say "No, thank you" to an order, not an easy thing to do and nobody wants to turn customers away but if you're on possibly difficult legal ground, working to very low profits and working all hours etc. then it just isn't worth it.

I've looked into licensing for print, and it seems that £200 for a run of up to 500 prints is the cheapest available.

There is no way I'm going to do the job without licensing, it may be a fairly large order, but it's not worth the risk IMO.

You could try to turn this to your advantage. If the customer only wants 50 the the image rights are £4 per item, but if you explain the £200 cost is for up to 500 then the cost comes down to £0.40 per unit. This may persuade him to buy more than 50 to bring the unit cost down.

There are some image agencies allowing them to be used for commercial uses, and you select the specific use and how many times the image is going to be used; then it shows you a quote.

go on ebay find a seller, contact him, see what discount he will do for 50 items and get them from him - ebayers get away with it time and time again (oh and only presuming its a him, might of course be a her and i am also doing this as a tongue in cheek reply)

seriously though its good that you stopped and thought, so many people dive headlong into it - again just take a look at ebay
