Re: My 'nightmare' weed ......

Post by AdamB »

I meant to upload these images before Xmas but I was too busy, then forgot (or tried to forgot) and have just remembered about them.

Anyway, I was approached by a band member who wanted to get some t-shirts made for members of his band for Xmas (a suprise). He wanted something from Scratch (they had a logo already) and wanted to have the dates and events of where the band had been on the back of the t-shirt (like the old meatloaf t-shirts - is that me showing my age!).

I asked how much writing it would be and my instant reply was - "vinyl is out of the question, it would take far too long".

Anyway, to cut a long story short - he wanted vinyl and paid for the service.

Just to give you an example of my nightmare weed - the text on the back of the shirts (just the dates and locations - not the dragons or anything) had 257 bits that required to be pulled once the outer vinyl was stripped away (like the insides of o's and a's etc), and this was just the dates and locations!

I knew that it was a 'big' job so I did most of the weeding during the day with the rest to do once I had closed ................. with just the dates and locations to weed and then press (he wanted 4 t-shirts) - I was lookinf forward to getting in my bed.

I had to do this 'that night' as they were being picked up the next morning (last minute as I was so busy). So, 257 bits per weed and 39 minutes to weed each sheet later, I was gasping for air! I had decided after doing the first one to count the bits (just to keep me sane) - bad idea as I then knew and I had another two to go!

Anyway, I finished at about 1am and they were picked up the next morning. A lot of work, but considering they were done in vinyl and not screen printed I would say I was extremely proud of the result (I can say it now as my fingers no longer hurt).

Some images below:

I just added a few more images of past work to my gallery, one that was a nightmare weed of classmates in a number 11 (again in vinyl). I thought that was a nightmare weed until this one knocked on the door!

WOW - that is soooooo much work, you must be using quality vinyl!
How many mistakes happened, did you do many repairs, or did you start out with a brand new blade?
How much can you charge for tops like that?
I am thinking £30 each back print only is too little......
Next time, say yes, but use WOW by The Magic Touch.
Well done!

Adam, would it be easier if you moved to another part of the UK that doesn't have as many letters in place names? Brilliant work though mate as they look superb.

Mistakes/Repairs - believe it or not .............. NONE! And to make things worse I only had 4 of the required size in stock (no music, pure concentration).

Vinyl/Flex - was Hot Flex from MDP - I had had a play around with the size of the font first to make sure I could cut and weed it at maximum size.

Brand New Blade - No, same one I'm using now :-)

Ref magic Touch - yeah I know buddy, this is the way to go and it's something I'm going to invest into in the very near future.

How much did I charge - Let's put this open for debate, how much would you guys charge for 4 t-shirts of this design via vinyl/flex (I'm not curious as I and the customer was happy with the price - just thought it would be good info to relate to for future jobs for others).
