If they are vat registered they have to charge vat on everything unless it's a zero rated or vat exempt. I'm afraid postage or courier delivery has to have vat charged on it.

I understand that but why can't the say postage 7.50 including vat. At least you'll know exactly how much postage is. I don't mind paying but vat on postage really gets up my nose because its a sly tax and companies hike up the postage to make money then we got to pay the government another lot. When your self employed you get very little back from them. Rant over

It seems unfair but is correct. If you buy stamps they are vat free, but if you pay for postage off a company that us vat registered they have to add vat on top. It is normal practice and not the fault of the supplier.

My monthly invoice from the post office shows that the bulk of it is exempt for vat, another small amount is zero rated and only a very small amount is at 20% (that's special delivery, anything over 1kg and it appears as of 1st Aug overseas post as well).
So it looks like a bit of a grey area there.

Invoice from tnt has vat on it as well as someother dodgy charges.

Make of that what you will.

Is it normal practice or correct procedure?, I need to check that with the vat people as one of my businesses that sends stuff out is vat reg, the other isn't so I don't want to get in the poo. Had two vat inspections over the last few years and that was never picked up.

You buy stamps vat free, 1st class 46p, but then if you sell a small item, lets say a coaster, the stamp would then cost you over 55p as the vat covers the whole of the sale including postage. Never could work out why stamps don't have vat on when you buy them but do when you use them?

If you are vat registered the postage on the invoice/website would not include vat until you totalled up at the bottom of invoice or at checkout - the vat would then be added. Any company you buy off Jennywren would do it this way so not sure what's different about ETC supplies. I never bought off them, but in my opinion, the title of this thread is very harsh - I'd consider renaming it!

agree completly with John, very unfortunate for them to have this post which will come up in searches and give them a bad rating for which they are not entitled to
