Double walled mug mailers/postal boxes

One of my friends has recently started selling double walled mug mailers suitable for 10oz mugs/ceramic banks.

I've got a sample here, and must say I'm impressed by them, if anyones interested, he's got them on ebay

Does he sell those boxes that take two 10oz mugs? They used to be quite handy.

Unfortunately, at £26 for 50, they're not economical enough to entice me away from polystyrene mug boxes.

If they're the ones I've had in the past then I wouldn't trust them to the postal service. They're great as non-shipping boxes and I do use them when the customer wants individual packing for a large order because I can put them in a stronger outer box. But I wouldn't use them on their own.

His prices aren't far away if they are strong enough to be shipping boxes. It's just that I'm more inclined towards poly boxes due to weight. Cardboard boxes weigh heavier and impact on postal charges. You could save up to 20p a box, but if the extra posting cost is 60p then you've not saved anything.

By way of example: I used to use the heavy smashproof boxes (from subli supplies) for sending china mugs because nothing else would fit. But since discovering the out-sized polystyrene boxes that Listawood sells, I'm saving 52p postage per mug (because the total weight drops below 250g). That's some saving, and it more than pays for the cost of the box.

True, but my standard mugs always seem to cost £2.48 (I think it is) upto around 500g (I think) - I dont think I have sent anything less then 250g

Thanks for the offer, but I probably wouldn't buy them anyway. Best to save the postage and keep the box.

Yes, but you need to think outside the box (pun not intended!).

If you send two mugs together then they weigh under 750g if sent in polystyrene boxes, but over 750g in smashproof boxes. Postage costs more.

Send three mugs together and they can go for under 1Kg via 2nd class post if in polystyrene boxes - but in cardboard boxes, they're over 1Kg and so can't go by 2nd class post anymore. The difference between 3 poly-packed mugs 2nd class post 1Kg is £1.75 or more. That's one heck of a chunk.

If you send a six-pack of mugs, then they can go under 2Kg in polystyrene but are over 2Kg in cardboard. That's another £1.77 difference (or a staggering £13.65 if your customer wants Special Delivery).

Smashproof boxes are great in certain circumstances, but when weight is a consideration they're terrible. Best to have both options to hand.
