Re: What is likely the cause of this colour bleed issue on mugs?

Post by Orangeoctopus »

Hi,

Can anyone please suggest a fix for this colour bleed issue that occurs at the top of the mugs as shown in the photos attached.

120g style mug sub paper and inktec sublinova inks, printing via epson L1800. 165 seconds at 200 degrees. Adkins twin mug press.

The photo mug print was not placed so close to the top of the mug but still bled.

Any suggestions very much appreciated.

Thanks Paul

Dunk the mug In hot tap water from the press to stop the sublimation process.

it’s the ink creeping up the mug as the heat rises.
dunking the mug will stop it.

As Mrteajunkie says, dunking in a bowl of hot water immediately after pressing usually helps. I used to leave the paper on the mug when dunking and removed it underwater after a few seconds.

It can also be caused by irregularly-shaped mugs or not enough pressure from the press, both of which will cause 'gassing out' issues.

Thanks for the replies much appreciated, I will give these suggestions a try.

I also wondered if I might benefit from trying a different sub paper? I just thought after the printing, the paper still has a good amount of ink left on it. ( or maybe thats normal for a ceramic substrate??? most of my printing has been on socks where the ink transfer from paper to substrate is much heavier )

Can I ask what inks & sub paper you are using for mugs? I'm using Ink Experts 120g ready cut style paper and inktec sublinova inks.

Any other mug printing tips much appreciated.

Many thanks Paul

Aside from the good advice above ensure that the paper is tight and cut the paper down to nearly just the artwork. Then tape all around the edges onto the mug.
