Re: Creating an ICC Profile - What Substrate to Scan From?

Post by BadZebedee »

I understand the principle in that I print out some test charts, scan them with the ICC gadget/software, print out a 2nd set of test charts, scan them in again and bingo I've got my profile (hopefully).

I only want to sublimate mugs. What do I print/sublimate the test charts onto as I can't scan a mug?

Do I print on a poly t-shirt or other flat surface or should I print/sublimate white tiles which have a similar surface to mugs?

Or is there some other method? I'm assuming I don't scan the printed paper as of course it looks nothing like the finished result.

There can be quite a colour shift in the finished print depending on substrate. I would suggest one that looks closest to the colours you get on a printed mug. T-shirts tend to have slightly different tones to a printed mug, so I would recommend a tile or aluminium panel for the most accurate result.

As above. Large tile or ideally metal. Although good luck as we never achieved a good result doing it ourselves so always use inkexperts who did a fantastic service. You print the charts on paper and then post them back.

Thanks both for the help. I do have some metal signs somewhere so I'll use them to print on if I need to.

It's Inkexperts ink that I've just switched to but they don't support my printer. I have discovered after a couple of test prints that my old profile (for a different manufacturers ink) seems to be working fine with the new ink so I may not need to make a new profile after all.

We use white metal sheets for hard surface glossy product.

For textiles, we use the actual textile, as they are all slightly different colours of "white"
