Problem Heat Pressing Bone China Mugs

Hi,

I am new to this forum but could really do with some advise please. I am having trouble dye subbing Bone China mugs. The print seems to come out quite blurry like the dye is bleeding out. It doesn’t look like shadowing from movement as the bleeding is around all edges and not just in one direction.
Also the colour doesn’t seem to pop as much as my other dye sub products is that because it is bone China?

These are the settings etc
Printer is SG400
paper truepix
press Genie III
temp 180’c
time 180 seconds
listawood balmoral mugs

I avoid these mugs wherever possible, the print is never as good as a normal ceramic mug. Suppliers tell me its because of the material thickness. Colour and clarity are never as good.

Hello Gracie_liz

Try dipping the mugs in water after you have pressed them, this will stop the sublimation process and the image should stay sharper.

Is your paper slightly damp? Try puting a blank piece into the press if there is steam for a few seconds then it is damp.

Can we have a photo perhaps? We print more bone China than ceramic with sg400 and genie 3 do should be able to shed some light.

That actually looks pretty good for bone China. I wouldn't water dip after due to cracking but do make sure you are placing above a cool fan within seconds and perhaps drop temp to 170c if you're using sawgrass inks. Bone china for us sells really well but indeed very different beast to standard ceramic coated mug.

Thank you!! I will give it a try lowering the temperature slightly and see what happens, but good to know that this is the sort of quality print to expect on bone China.
