Re: 1st Attempts

Post by PeteO »

so, first two mugs came of the press this evening. Very exciting!

1st one did well having been printed on cheap copier paper left in machine after nozzle check :)

2nd was done on proper sublimation paper.

couple of things I've noticed,

colours are more dull then vibrant - not terrible just not right

am I right in thinking if icc profile will correct? Or side effect of non sawgrass ink?

Blacks look purple

Increase temperature seems to be advice on this? Any thoughts?

silly question, press at 180, insert mug and temp drops to 140, am I correct in waiting for press to reach 180 again before timing? And should I still be allowing the full 3 minutes at this stage or shorten due to time spent warming, as shortened it to 2 and half due to time in press reheating to 180?

mug two seemed to have a lot of ink left on paper as well, almost like I could have pressed again? Is this correct or. Do I need increase time and temp?

Hi Pete, have a read through the mug printing section, these questions have been answered a lot, and might be why you are not getting a fast response, as i have said to a lot of people, make a brew, and get reading. good luck

There is a section that appears above your post with similar threads. This uses your thread title so always a good idea to be descriptive as possible here. As Mrs. M has said, take a read through the forum and see all of this covered many times. if you don't find what you need by all means pop back on ;-)

So, did a couple more mugs yesterday.

Changed some settings in the ricoh drivers to match ceramic printing, and paper type and colours now seem more vibrant.

Identified the purple as a print issue, not temp, but confused as according to photoshop i was printing 0,0,0 however shall keep playing.

On a side note did also produce my first 'waste' mug, but as only contained a small single sided image, will give me lots of place to play :)

Hi Pete,

Congrats on your first mugs! Personally I wait until the press is at 180 with my dummy mug in, then I replace it with my blank and wait until the temp gets back to 180. Then I go for 3 mins.

I wouldn't worry about the ink left on the paper, as long as your image on the mug looks good and there is no scorching on the paper then you are doing good!

Hi PeteO, can you tell me what settings did you set for the ricoh printer? What type of paper did you selected?

Hi Enucos,

Print Quality is set to high, and Paper is set to glossy (doesnt have a photo option and guessed this to be closest by description) however have also had success when set to inkjet.

Read somewhere that this puts more ink to paper, and is preferable on ceramics like mugs and moneyboxes

Hi just wondering from reading your post, are you using a Ricoh printer with SawGrass inks. Sublijet R ?
if so and you are using Windows PC, have you downloaded the PowerDriver from SawGrass website. As PowerDriver will give you the correct colour profiles for sublimation.

Sorry please ignore this post. I missed that you are use non SawGrass inks.
Cheers

Thanks PeteO :)
I will give it a try with glossy, but when I select glossy paper I don't have high print quality option, only quality priority.

Glossy is no good , printer should be on inkjet plain paper, Quality priority, colour profile OFF. Dithering error diffusion photo image.

Glossy will over ink the paper, make sure you use a profile in your printing application instead of the driver. the settings you have now are for PIGMENT GEL INK not Dye Sub.
