I need more space! I'm considering shared artists' studios, garages or light industrial units. What kind of rent are people paying for their work premises?

This is going to vary so much around the country.
I'd recommend looking for premises which are rates exempt, or premises where the rates are inclusive- look for enterprise zones.
We're looking at moving at the moment, to premises which will cost £5-6K per year (depending on which deal we go with from the landlord) which will be approx 1200 square feet on two floors (plus potential for expansion into the roof space) and this will be rate free, giving us room for the 'factory' space upstairs, with the ground floor split between warehousing at the back and a retail shop at the front.
We currently have approx the same space and cost in an artist studio type set up in an arts centre we helped get up and running.

Hi Gary

I take it you have looked at the start up units that the (city?) council let out around Cambridge? They used to be very reasonably priced but that may have changed by now.

As you will doubtless be aware Cambridge is not the cheapest place for property of any description!
