@Justin... I appreciate your kind offer. If after trying the suggestions that Spawn has made above it still doesn't work, then I would very much like to accept your offer of a mainboard. I will research this weekend and see if I can find out what the process involves to change one out

I remember something similar years ago with an Epson Photo 1200 it would print half a page then stop. This was using USB connection, yet on Parallel it worked fine, ended getting the printer swapped out by Epson. Does the 1400 have a parallel port, does your computer have a parallel port do you have a centronics cable? If you have all them might be worth trying to see if you can print out a full page. As you can tell I've never looked at a 1400.

@draig... No Parallel on the 1400, USB only.

Justin, may I please take up your offer on the motherboard? Turns out there's no firmware update for the 1400 and cleaning the optical strip as suggested by Spawn above didn't fix it either. Trying to change the motherboard now is the only thing I can try. Let me know about P&P and I'll get it over to you.

Justin... turns out it's not too bad, mine is now out. You need to remove the two end covers (2 screws in each) and pop them off. Then remove the back cover that surrounds the metal back plate that houses the power supply and main board. Then remove the 7 screws that hold the metal tray in place and it slides out, you need to remove the cables that connect the board as you slowly pull it out. Have a look at this YouTube video, it's for a 1900 but it's very similar and very helpful. You don't have to strip the printer down as much as shown in the video, just the bits I mention above, as you can see from my pic.
Edit.. sorry put wrong link on, this is the correct one!

OK board is out

I see that you have to run a program to get the printer to accept a replacement head....I hope it isn't the same for the mainboard! PM me your address and I'll get it on it's way. Think I'll strip the rest of this 1400 down now...masterclass anyone? Printers under the hammer?
BTW....I hope you labelled all those cables!
