ECWID seems pretty cool
Personally i find opencart amazing, for the money you save on monthly costs you can pay someone to develop something that is tailored to you instead of you conforming to a system
Ive never had an issue with support, when i have i have found a solution very quick and normally it was down to the 3rd party software i had added not the core software

For us we just want something that works, and can sit on our website without much faffing about, as our time is better spent designing and producing products, so something that "just works" out of the box, and can easily be maintained over time is key. With this, I was looking for something that was mostly set-up, where I did conform to a pre-defined system, with some chance of customisation, and ECWID fits the bill.

With ecwid you have access to code so you can change things to
Not true.
I have been using Ecwid since it came out and users have never had access to the code - the cart is hosted in the cloud.
You can change only the look of the layout and "hide" labels using css and javascript, so you need to know a bit about css and javascript/jquery to really change it.
Yes it is easy to set up and use, but when it comes to SEO it is pretty rubbish = I have found it is best to make landing pages linking back to the product.
With the API's available it is possible to create your own front end and only use Ecwid as the backbone.
Overall it is one of the better shopping carts if you know how to fine tune it.
