Yeah, I have found some like that, and would need to put some packing peanuts in it 
like martin suggested though, I will need to look at something more custom in the longterm - if this takes off.....I found a supplier that can creat a box with foam inserts, and will do small runs...but the price has get to be competitve...at the moment for a mug, message and contents and gift box, the lowest price is about £12 plus posting costs...which is quite reasonable for a ready made personalised (small) gift - do you think?
