open file-
then go to FILE-PLACE and place a image, this is what i do if thats the type of thing you need.

this is what i get, when i go to file new, make a template, then i drag my picture to the photoshop program, and then i drag my image onto my template, but then cannot resize or drag, or alter the picture size..

click ctrl+r (cmd+r on mac) now you will be able to resize your image within template. or... go to image>resize

i would recommend to visit youtube and type photoshop resizing or similar keywords that my be helpful in future

photoshop is a MASIVE learning curve.

which program would you recommend for a newbie? ( easier to get used too )

adobe ellements is more user friendly i would say... coz there is no as much options there

I'm a CorelDraw man and the Corel suit comes with PhotoPaint. Alot more expensive than elements but it does more and you can work with vectors. We all prefer the software we know and each package will have strengths and weakness. There are usually trial versions, I know Corel has 30 days so you can try before you buy.
Look at Serif software as well, that is good value for money with a money back guarantee.

I tried Serif before e and i loved it for simplicity, yet professional tools. but i couldn't find any way this software can work with color management... So ricoh windows users only. But if you do use ricoh and you are on the windows i would recommend to try Alans advice!

I'm pretty sure I'm right in saying that PagePlus/DrawPlus/PhotoPlus all have colour management and in theory should work fine with PowerDriver at least. Biggest problem with Serif is that once you have their software you will be pestered with emails and phone calls when new versions come out. I have tried all of them but I am still of the opinion that the Corel Suite still offers the best option but I am using it for signs, litho printing, digital print artwork etc. Not everybody may justify the cost that said for non profit making and student use the Academic version is a gift.
