it looks like GIMP CAN so the paths. but only in SVG.

I work with corel 12, don't like new x6 and also photoshop on Mac and Pc depending on what I am doing,illustrator is great at tracing

Draw changed again in X7 with a newer interface, pages had tabs, that with other changes I wasn't keen on - after using it for while I got to like it and appreciate how much better it was, now when I go back to X6 or earlier it feels as if bits are very missing.

I still think best version is Corel 12. Has all the features you need, and very very easy to use, and you can master it with in 30 mins of install

Yes 12 is a very strong version - later versions use bezier curves instead of hundreds of straight lines for contours, colour management was significantly improved (although some may not agree:) and the import filters just become more inline with later versions of Illustrator. The last two versions work better with later operating systems and make use of multi threading and 64 bit better. Certainly V12 has the core features you are likely to need - the X series just improves and adds a few others.
