Re: Glass Repair (Shallow Scratches).

Someone here might be able to help even though this is not related to the business of the forum.

We recently bought a small Mercedes, I have a few things to repair on it (Idler pulley is the most painful as I need to drop the engine) anyway - the windscreen has scratches on it, insurance say it is not covered for a replacement.

It like someone has attached a few pieces of fine sand paper to the blades and ran them for a few hours, I have heard people speak of repair kits but I am having no luck finding anything I beleive might actually work.

Has anyone had this problem and solved it? if so what did you use?

Problem would be a stonechip right in your view....or rather a whacking stone right through it! haha.

Have you priced a windscreen out of interest?

A 'Stone Chip' repair man told me to ask insurance for a new screen as these scratches are right in my field of view - insurance dont see it that way.
Apparently you can ask for a new windscreen, you dont have to break it (I also need a new screen for my beemer this year).

Of course when you need something from the insurance they do all they can to deny you :(

Its £180 for a new screen - its for a 2003 A170.

I have a bar of that in my workshop, at the Polishing Station ! I'm guessing the idea is to take a layer off of the glass rather than trying to fill the gaps.. Hmmm.

Hi there

If they are really fine it is possible (My background was in glass replacement) we used a resin polish similar to jewellers rouge and a special polishing head.

Not many people do this now as its very time consuming and a pain in the buttocks.

Problems arise if the scratch is too deep, by the time you get it looking acceptable you have normally put a small indent into the glass that doesn't clear when you put your wipers on which can be worse.

Some windscreen guys will use the details of one vehicle to claim for the replacement of a windscreen on another for you, allegedly!

try some of your local scratch and dent repair people.

Another avenue to explore is if you have a glazier nearby, they are polishing scratches from glass regularly, just a thought

Many thanks for the responses, this was exactly the kind of thing I wanted to see - the Kit is the way to go I think in this case.

I understand everything you have said Bob, makes perfect sense.

Will post my result once I get a chance to tackle this annoying problem.
