I may need to press items thicker than 15mm. Does anyone know what difference a lower platen makes to what can be achieved with the Adkins swing away heat press.

I had a lower platen made from steel. I gained enough to do the 20mm thick acrylics etc. but it isn't perfect. Adkins do a table that lowers the height, not cheap as you'd expect though. At the time I bought the £75 CoralGraph press and did all thicker items on here, worked a treat. I now have a PressMech so thicker items aren't an issue. By the time you've had the steel cut to shape, corners rounded, fitted a mat you're well on the way to a cheap press, certainly food for thought.
