Epson 4880 info required

Good resource to also look at, although mostly USA/Canada focusses in it's core user base, it has a much bigger user base than here, which leads to more diversity in topics discussed/experience shared - a good example being with Hybrid set ups. Not that I am saying you should not post/read here, as here is obviously very good too!

ive gone with the epson 4880 now so will look in to other equipment now like an heat press, need to find a good one with a Uk supplier for customer services.

Just took purchase of my Epson 4880 and the seller demonstrated it and all looks well.
i can't wait to get going with various projects.
first the ink....I don't think I'll set up all 8 ports with subli ink so I can use the printer for other things but to you that buy subli inks where is a good realisable place?

Think I'm confusing myself here.
So I've got my epson 4880 printer that's got 8 banks for inks, it can be configured as an hybrid or even a tribrid. I deffo want subli inks in it but was wondering about printing transfers also but with the standard inks.

Here's the confusion, rather than have it as an hybrid can I put in subli inks in the full 8 slots giving me full sublimation print quality and use these inks to print on my transfers?.

with my little knowledge I'm assuming that subli Inks are solely for heat pressing?

Unless you want the expense of RIP software to run it as a hybrid, then I would say you're best using it as an 8 colour sublimation printer.

But, to answer your question, sublimation inks only have their 'correct' colour once they have been sublimated to a polyester surface, so are useless if used for other printing types.

quick update. Contacted Sawgrass re. using OEM inks and subli inks as an hybrid printer.
very nice chap from Sawgrass UK. contacted me and looked in to the situation and the resellers of the inks and the software said for me to use that combination would be a nightmare and would lead to problems. On that he advised for me to go one way or the other and probs go for a full set of subli ink.

I would deffo think twice before getting one. Ask yourself do I actually need a printer of that size, what am I going to print on it, are the inks going to pay for themselves. All questions I asked myself but then went and purchased one. Yes they are a really good printer, yes the ink is very good. Looking back for me the expense probably outweighs the useage. The printer will need regular use as the nozzles will block and you'll find yourself going through the unblocking procedure quite often, It's an expensive setup you can hardly afford to waste on cleaning out.
when I first set up I talked myself in to thinking I needed it but to be honest I wished I'd gone with a cheaper A4 setup with cheaper inks.
Hope this helps I realise it's probs not the answer you wanted but I could have saved around £1000. I cannot knock the printer just the need.

Cheers mate.... I have been using a Ricoh 3110 for about two years and it's now not cost affective as the inks are £40 for CMY and K is £55 for 29ml. A4 100% coverage will cost you £0.60p so when you're doing say coasters you're adding 10p to your costs.

I am doing a lot of mugs and coasters and want to start doing some SUb tees and cushion covers and other items.

Is yours a hybrid...? As if possible I'd like to have 4 sublimation and 4 pigment.

I am a DTG printer and very us to dealing with print heads as most are Epson 4880 heads...
