Re: Vibrant Colours

Post by Renniwano »

Ok.. this maybe due to the fact that it's the Easter holidays and my brain is fried due to kids constantly at it.... but I have had a customer contact me after doing her a sample mug/coaster of two of her designs..

She loved both mug and coaster.. but has now contacted me today and mentioned that the colours on the mugs are more vibrant than on the coaster and would there be a way of making the coaster colours stand out more..

As you can see from the images the colours she has are very bright.. but and I am not sure, hence asking you guys.. wouldn't the mug look more vibrant due to the fact it's on a mug.. and if not where am I going wrong lol.. because they both looked fab when they left here and very vibrant in colour.. so it's left me totally stumped :/

Probably not much help.. I know lol

I find when I do both we the same design the mug is always brighter but I put that down to different textures.

Are you using Unisub coasters? I'm guessing from the pics they're not. Might be worth trying. You'll always see a slight difference as you say, because the surfaces are different.

This reminds me of a customer that wanted me to match specific colours, show incredible detail on fabric which was scanned and so on. I spent a long time getting this as close as possible and they were delighted....but never placed a repeat order so it was time pretty much wasted.

I guess the polite answer is, no, they'll never look identical but you can get them as close as possible!

Ceramic coasters may be the answer - get a sample and test it I suppose, and then tell her that if she wants them to match she'll need to upgrade to ceramic coasters and the cost implications. It's then up to her to see how much she values it.

Can't say as i've ever noticed a huge difference in print quality between the 2, I do favour the Unisub though. Might be worth a go.

Might speak to her and see if she wants to wait for a sample then.. otherwise will explain that short of going ceramic coasters.. there will always be a slight difference

Cheers guys.. I felt right daft asking lol

I've always found the unisub coasters to be nice and vibrant but you can up the saturation a bit if you take the image into photoshop and give it say 30 points of extra saturation.( Image-Hue& Saturation) I find this helps with some graphics. You could always just try one and see....

Thanks for that idea.. I am going to have a bash with a unisub coaster against my subliwood.. and if there's no remarked change, will have to give that bash :)

If you have a spare blank coaster you can waste to test..

Open a copy of the image in Gimp or Photoshop and save it with a different name (maybe add coaster after it)

In the Colors menu (in Gimp - Photoshop will also have something like that too)
Increase Saturation somewhere between 25% and 40%
In Curves - Add a standard S curve to get some contrast
In Levels increase the Gamma ONLY. Increase it to about 1.25.

Save it and print a coaster using this. It just might make your coasters look closer to the mug in brightness.

You might have to experiment with the saturation and gamma.

It might not too - so that's why I'd work on a copy, not your normal image to print.
