Cloudy transfer
Re: Cloudy transfer
Hello all, I'm not only new here, but new to the Dye sub world & I'm hoping you seasoned veteran's can help me out.
I'm attaching a pic of a hardboard coaster I did. I started with a very high res pic & the paper print looked great, but it turned out really bad.
I used the product specs as far as temp, time & pressure but it still came out really cloudy looking.
Any ideas people?

I just got an order for name badges & they need them right away. I hope I don't run into any issues like this with them!
Thanks in advance.

Re: Cloudy transfer
Pisquee, I don't know that it's a known brand. The label says JP Sublimation paper & I'm assuming the JP just stands for Johnson Plastics where I bought the Ricoh printer & all my initial supplies to get started.
By the way, this isn't my first sub attempt, just my first hardboard print. My best results so far have been on metal license plates.

Re: Cloudy transfer
If it looked good on the paper you may have printed on the wrong side of the paper, this would explain the bad tranafering.
Re: Cloudy transfer
Hi,
I've had transfer issues when putting the coasters in the press the wrong way up. Coaster should be print side up, with print on top.

Re: Cloudy transfer
Johnsons have a good reputation - you should give them a call.
If the paper is OK, my guess would be that there may be moisture in the wood, and that you should prepress them with some normal paper to dry them out
Also taping the coaster to the transfer may help too

Re: Cloudy transfer
Have you had a good look at the coaster? They come with a clear film over the top to keep them clean. This is a rookie mistake that 99% of us make once in a while.......
you may not find it on the one you've done now as it would of burnt away but check others to me this looks like the issue but I may be wrong
welcome to the world of dye sub and welcome to the forum...

Thanks for all your help people!
I made sure I printed on the correct side of the paper & these coasters don't have a plastic film on them. As far as which side was up, I thought they were supposed to be face down, no?
I was wondering how critical the time was, I had a helper press these & I have a feeling they were in the press about 10-15 seconds longer than recommended. Would that do it?

Hi,
I do mine face up. It doesn't work for me the other way.
I press at 170 degrees idle, then 180 degrees for 70 sec. This is for Ricoh prints on Unisub coasters.
