Re: colour reproduction problems (epson xp212)

Post by decarbon8 »

Hi all
So as you will see bit of a newbie here, I've just entered into the realms of sublimation printing, but having some issues with printer colour reproduction with pinks, I'm using an epson xp212 which has been printing absolutely fine but today trying to produce some coasters with a floral patter (roses & fuschias sp) but they are coming out more red rather than pinks, tried the print on my other printer which is a canon mg5250 and that prints the same document fine.

I've heard it maybe the icc profile but on phoning the company that I bought the kit from they have never heard of this causing problems so was of no help at all. How can I tell if it is the icc profile causing the issue on this range of colours, and how do I go about getting a new icc profileprofile to suit my xp 212 and sublimation ink?

many thanks in advance

What ICC profile has the supplier supplier for you to use?
If none, and they are saying you don't need one, then they are fobbing you off - either because they don't know what they're talking about or are lying.

Without an ICC profile (or with the wrong ICC profile) you are effectively printing blind, with the computer not knowing how to mix the four colours of ink in the printer to produce the correct colours (this is what the ICC does.)

The colours that you print are affected by the inks you use, the printer you use, along with the transfer paper you use - change any of these and the colours/print quality will change. So, it is not possible to just have a sublimation profile for the XP212 as it is not just the printer which is important - different manufacturers of sublimation produce ink with different colour biases, and the ICC compensates for this.

If you get in touch with user Paul, on this forum, he can make you a bespoke ICC profile for your printer.

He also sells this service through his website, here:

Thanks for reply, well the people I bought the kit off didn't supply the printer with sublimation ink this was bought from another company at that point I had no idea of needing new icc profiles etc etc, the printer obviously came with drivers to install but no specific icc profile, In photoshop cc the print settings are as follows Image

If you need a specific profile for a specific ink how will Paul be able to make me a profile if the ink supplied is unbranded?

The company I got the printer off have told me they use sawgrass inks but I only got told this today after having the equipment for a week, I did look at sawgrass inks like sublijet etc etc but didn't know if it was compatible with my printer as the xp212 wasn't listed.

Dont know why they have to make it so complicated lol

You could use Sawgrass inks, but it isn't a printer that they have an ICC profile for, so you'd still be paying £25 for a profile.

for getting a custom ICC profile made, you print off test charts, and then post them to Paul, who scans them to measure how your printer/inks actually print, so Paul doesn't even need to know what printer model you have, or ink you're using.

Once you have the profile, in that Photoshop window, you select Photoshop manages colours, and then in the box underneath select your profile.
