why me? electrical disaster

I am having a couple of days trying to get 'stuff' done - need a new fuse board fitting so that I can get power out to the workshop. i have just pulled down a panelled in bit of wall where all our electrics run from the back of the old fuse board into the house - it appears that most of the house is wired in 1.5mm and not 2.5mm cable.

For the non technical reader

1.5mm cable = mega expensive rewire, bugger (

I always take a belt and braces approach to things. If I built it, its over engineered and will last a life time on the basis that if it could go wrong it will.

My father was the unluckiest man alive, he always reckoned that if anything could go wrong it would, anything he purchased - if there was the slightest chance of there being a duff one in the shop - it would have his name on it. Since he died a few years ago I seem to have been moved up the unlucky list into his position (

parents house wiring went last year, they had it rewired from the outside, apparently its becoming more popular, must say they have done a very neat job, it does mean all the new sockets are on/near the window wall, but they then had them put some of the old ones back lifting a few floorboards, but no where near the upheaval it would have been otherwise

well every things back on an even kilter again. Only took a couple of hours and half a reel of cable to put right. Just a small section done in 1.5mm

I trained as a Sparky, great days but I saw some (what I thought at the time) dodgy stuff !

Then of course I lived in Greece for Ten years, and learned the Greek system when it came to wiring (They have 3 Phase on Corfu as it was cheaper at the time of installation at the time of electrifying the Island some time in the 70's) - and that was pretty scary stuff.

Morocco has a more 'Sedate' approach to things like this - I asked for the 'Power Tree' next to our vehicle to be re-connected so the Moroccan Electrician appeared and did this for me:

fk me Nik, you have a hornet, many many years ago i was known on the hornets nest as misshornet, and still have my 600 i think we have a 9 knocking about somewhere as well - what a small world - mid you i have bar end mirrors on mine, and also used a rear view camera for a while

I have Two Hornets - and F2 and an F4, massively under-rated bikes.. loads of fun once they are set up correctly !
Oh and I just re-built this 1978 Honda C90zz (6v Round lighter)..

Someone pulled out in front of me and the F4 Hornet was a Cat B write off - my fellow bikers said 'You will never get that back on the road' so guess what I did ? It's on a Q plate now and rebuilt. Got insurance payout of £3.2k and it cost me about £600 to re-build INCLUDING the Red Tape with VOSA and the associated Msva testing that has to be done
