I have now purchased an epson 4800 and after the hassle caused by by windows 7 with the installation my next issue is, what size do i print at if i want to print a canvas, i assume canvas bars are in specific sizes and dimensions can anybody shed a little light on this? also what are the recommended size settings in print options for this printer as im using the roll option but it says 16x20inch and the roll is obviously longer than that

In the print driver, select roll feed, and then in the drop down list, select "user defined" here you can set-up your presets for the things you normally print.
As for the roll size, I would have thought it would have been 17" wide, rather than 16"?

For canvas bars, there are different thicknesses, and then two styles of printing - one where you only print the front surface, and the sides of the canvas bars are kept white, and the other where the image bleeds around the edges.
In my opinion, the thickers bars look better, as does the image bleeding around the sides.

Here is a link to the gallery wrap bars from lion
Personally I buy planed 2" x 1" and cut it with a mitre saw then glue and pin them. This is because I produce odd size prints as the artist wants them resized proportionally and he uses some strange sizes of canvas.
You need to add around 2.5" to each edge for this so your canvas size is 5" larger all round than the actual print. To avoid poor alignment of the white area you can mirror the edge to give a continuous feel. ps actionscript here.
Normal stretcher bars are really only suitable for prints that sit in a frame as they have too narrow a profile to look good.
I wish you the best of luck getting a good finish as it took me hours to get the wrapping technique right especially the corners. Also always wrap in a warm environment as the ink/surface of the canvas tends to crack when cold and giving your print an interesting craquelure finish.
And finally use roll material as it works out cheaper and gives to more flexibility. For example to get an actual A4 print the canvas dimensions should be 8.3" + 5" (x) 11.7" + 5". [13.3"x16.7" canvas size]. If you use an A4 sheet the finished print will be 3.3" x 6.7" which is bit in the tiny side.
