newbie needs help

hi guys i purchased a second habd mug press, and mugs, all only a couple of months old, i have done a few mugs with fantasic results UNTILL..........

i bought new mugs from ebay, AND, my mug press acting weird.

This is what i do...

print onto my usual sublimation paper, and cut out

turn on mug press, wait till it gets to temp - 180, then insert the mug, wait 180 seconds peel of the paper and lovley.

NOW

when i do the same, the mug press goes over the 180 randomly, every now and then, also when i peel the paper away i get discolouration and there a rough finish to the mug, as if the paper has left a resisdue maybe?

please help as im getting dishartened, everything was going so well, lol

Welcome to the world of sublimation.. you might find that it's the mugs that are the problem I have had some cheap mugs from the bayofE when I first started and they looked OK.. but like you never had the smooth finish.. and definitely weren't the sharp finish I get from other mugs from suppliers..

They look ok, until I do the process, before that the are nice and glossy, where's best to get em from?

Might be worth popping an image on here of one of your 'not so happy with' mugs.. as the discolouration could be a number of things..

Personally, I have learnt the hard way that the straightest, most consistent mugs have been from a couple of suppliers mentioned on this forum..

If the kit was cheap and chinese then there is no telling if its the press playing up temp wise and if the mugs are from ebay they could easily be seconds where the coating is inconsistent. There are people here who have chinese presses and swear by them saying that their £50 press is just as accurate as one costing 300 quid. They are the exception to the rule and you will mostly hear people muttering and cursing the day they bought it. You will hear a phrase here on a regular basis - buy cheap, buy twice.

However if it was originally from a good supplier and the person you bought it from was just selling kit off that was no longer used its probably worth trying to sort out the problem. Its just possible that the seller had exactly the same problems as you are now experiencing!

If the heat display and timer display is going mad then the mug wrap is knackered.I have just had the same with a 3 month old 10oz blanket from colergraph,cheap press,cheap blankets,buy a proper press,i lerned in the first three months,that goes for the press as well

Try putting the mug in at around 140-150 degrees and let it build to 180. Regarding the 'rough' feel I had something similar and found that once the mug had cooled it could be rubbed off with a soft cloth. Might be worth a try...good luck.

thanx for the advise, and yes the roughness did come away with a wet cloth, what sort of mug press and price should i get?
