I'm having problems with this mug press:

http://www.subli.co.uk/shop/dye-sublima ... d_860.html

The top and bottom of the mug are very faded. When I take the paper off, the middle is brown but you can see the edges just aren't sublimating. Am I doing something wrong or is the press just no good. I'm using the following settings:

ricoh sg3110 with subli jet paper
idle temp: 110
press temp: 180
time: 180

hiya

still learning myself, but I think the browns are because the ricoh inks work better if mug is 170 degrees press temp. have a look at bms website ( printerowners.co.uk) then look at mugs and temps/times. The faded bits I thought were where the mug is not pressed hard enough, but am now thinking that the mug needs pre warming. I too have problems with faded bits on large mugs and latte mugs

are these full bleed top and bottom? Printing in black?

Brown would normally indicate the mug was over cooked and fading is usually under cooked. If you are not pre warming the mugs before they go in the press then do so - the open end and the thick base of the mug dissipate heat and so don't reach the same temp for the same time as the central body of the mug.

In my experience black is the worst thing to try and print full bleed - especially if you haven't got your mug pre warming sorted out

Could you add some images of the mugs with issues.. ?? paper browning possibly be down to the temp/time BUT it could also be down to the mugs not being perfectly straight etc..

Maybe you could let us know what mugs you are using.. and some images so we could see what exactly is happening :)

Thanks for the replies. I'll get some images sorted when I'm back in the office tomorrow.

I read about reducing the temp with ricoh inks but as the image is fading at the bottom, I didn't want to make this problem worse by lowering the temp. If it helps, I also struggle with the image bleeding after it has been pressed. I don't use water as it cracks the mugs.

I'm not pre warming the mugs. How would I go about doing this?

I'm using the orca coated mugs from subli.co.uk (although I will be going to bms in future as I have emailed subli a couple of times and received no reply).

thanks for the help!

have a quick search of the forums for 'Andrew James Teppanyaki' - a hot plate that you can get from Amazon for 20 quid.
