pop in to your local wilkinson or similar and look for flat baking silicone mate. but make sure there is no texture.
i never menage to get descent slate without silicon mate.

thanks paul! now there is an idea...will have to go try get one when i can! is the idea of the silicone that there are irregularities in the slates surface, and it pushes the paper into them? haven't received my order yet so can't physically look at them yet!!

yes this is exactly what it is + helps to even temperature on the slate.

hi all i have read throw this many times and decided to get some slates,
now i like making everything in an oven unless it needs to be done quicker, then i will move to heat presses..
i done a photo slate in the halogen oven
temp 200, time 8 mins, i have attached a image to show the finsihed result.

This was an order i think it looks fine my first 2 went yellow so this is much much better considering

How did you apply pressure from the paper to the slate in the oven or did you not use anything?

i wrapped the image like you guys said, then i put the slate, image face down on to the metal rack inside the oven, so i basically used the slate as its own weight. i did . i got no streaks or blow outs from any slate i done today, but some was yellow in colour from over baking id imagine... im really impressed with the outcome and only thought of the oven when my heat press was playing up so i thought i would share

well I printed my first slate yesterday, and really happy with how it turned out! followed pauls video, and worked a charm. turned out a silicon mug wrap I had purchased before was just about the right size for the slate, so didn't have to buy any more!

As for 'Silicone Sheet' - I have a few Silicone sheets that cost me £6 a pair (400x400).


I have heard more than a few people suggest Baking Paper as a cheaper alternative - I can see the attraction of that but what is the advantage? apart from price - surely the Silicone sheets MUST have an advantage over Baking Paper or there wouldn't be such a mahoosive price difference?

Silicon sheet is thicker, hence helps with the uneven surface of a slate. Also can help distribute heat more evenly. Baking paper does neither of these.
