Re: need some advice regarding epson p50

Post by blackhat7 »

hi all, just signed up today and i am in desperate need for some advice on this machine

i'd like to know whether its a good printer or no??

reading the reviews online i've come to know that its a top-notch printer for photo's on glossy paper

any one with experience with this printer can assure me of its quality?

basically i am going to buy it to use it with ciss

and here's my small plan

buy the printer
buy the CISS
buy 1liter inks from [removed by admin] <-- thats the only brand i can find in my country
install a home made waste ink tank
i found the reset utility for ink pad counter finally

also one more thing that i forgot to mention... i'd like to know if i need any icc profile for printing on normal a4 paper (Double A Brand) or anything else because i will be using the CISS
also whether this machine is troublesome or its top-notch as described in many customer reviews
thanks in advance

You can't legally buy that ink to use in this printer IN THE UK but in your country it MAY be different If the Sawgrass patent extends to your country then the company, by selling you the ink will be in breach of the Sawgrass patent, they have to ask you for proof of a large format printer.

The printer itself is excellent. I have one running here and it has performed flawlessly for a long time. The one thing I would say is ditch the CIS and run with refil carts. I'm assuming from your choice of printer you won't be printing a lot so topping up the carts won't be done all that often. As a 6 colour printer the quality is superb.

You can use a ready made profile for another 6 colour printer that will get you 'somewhere' close but you'll need a custom made profile to get things perfect.

If (and this is a big IF) you CAN use third party inks, bear in mind the shelf life, a litre of ink will take a heck of a lot of using! It's down to you to check with Sawgrass over the patent.

I've removed the name of the company you mention for third party inks.

thanks alot for the quick reply
i will be printing around 50~100 color pages daily ....

may i know why you prefer the refill carts?? and regarding the sawgrass issue please don't bother yourself with it... i am somewhere on earth where these things never come around..

regarding the icc profile, how can i make it perfect or get one that will work nice with me??

I (as do many) prefer the refil carts because they don't tend to throw up the same problems as a CIS unit. I've been testing a very good CIS this last few months and whilst it is excellent it isn't without it's problems. Maybe it's air getting in the system or being trapped in the long tubes but you soon notice a difference changing back to refil carts....it's a bit of a mystery but very well documented. Having a second set of carts filled on standby may be an option to help things along.

If you're printing that many sheets, you may be better off looking for a printer with a larger ink capacity. Epson do larger machines, as do Brother.

Send Paul (username the same) a PM about making a profile, he can advise and help with this.

hmmm.. i really dont know what the do my friend justin

honestly we're having 4 heavy duty laserjet printers, i am planning on buying this one for the small jobs and specially for printing glossy photo's, now is it possible you can tell me what the problems i may run into other than the air bubbles in the ciss tubes? i've checked out some youtube videos and its not a long procedure, and by the way, i have no problem wasting 3-5 sheets from week to week for this matter,, also i'd like to tell you that i will buy a head cleaning solution for this epson p50 so that from time to time i clean its head to keep it in a good condition... regarding the icc i will see what the do.. thanks alot

Then forget everything I mentioned about patents! lol.

P50 will come with standard profiles that will be fine for that work. You could try a CIS but personally I'd stick to refil carts.
