Re: Postage price rise.. April 2nd 2013

Post by meldean »

i have been doing some tests for the new royal mail prices and have aquired a box that is 15cm x 15cm x10cm. Fits 2 mugs in perfectly and the box costs 42p which works out cheaper than using 2 poly mug boxes. I received the box yesterday and popped in 2 mugs wrapped in bubble wrap that comes free with BMS anyway. Dropped an peice of cardboard from the mug packaging and placed in between the mugs and sent to my self to see if it can take the good old royal mail bashing..

Will post my findings on this when i get the package delivered.. This does come into the small parcel bracket and solves the issue.

Use cardboard boxes all the time, but I do add an extra sheet of bubble wrap and card to pack out - they should arrive fine!

thats good to hear. Just wanted to test the small packet size for 2 mugs so that i can still use royal mail. Anything over than 2 mugs anyway was always cheaper by courier..

Are these double-wall or single-wall?

I've been doing some calculations myself but I haven't bought any boxes in yet. I intend to get some that will fit under the 16x16x16 size that can be used for other items, or with a piece of card between two mugs.

I've used double-walled boxes slightly smaller than this for El Grande mugs in the past and also 8" plates, and they've always survived just fine (we played frisbee with the plate box!), so I expect this would survive okay too.

Where do you get them from for 42p each? I'm planning on getting some made up that are double the length, so I can cut them back and save costs but I still don't think I could get them for 42p each.

The trouble I'm finding is that most boxes are dimensioned from the inside, while Royal Mail's dimensions are for the outside. Buying in a 16x16x16 box would be too big because of the thickness of the walls. For a double-walled box, I think 14.5x14.5x14.5 is about as big as we can go and still be sure of not going over the dimensions. 14.5cm would not be enough to put the mug in a bubble bag, but I'm not sure it's needed (I didn't use them with my El Grandes). Also, if you put a document wallet on the outside, you'll want one dimension to be another cm or so shorter. I'm aiming for a box size of 14.5x14.5x10 (the 10cm is to allow for the box flaps while still being enough for the height of the mugs).

Maybe thinking of getting some specially made to fit these dimensions which would take 2 mugs - I'd need to buy quite a few thousand at a time to cover the die making charges - If I went ahead is anybody interested in purchasing, if they were at the right price?

Found a 15.2cm cube single walled box here ... http://www.boxesdirect.co.uk/index/1.Si ... =152&d=152
36.2p each for quantities up to 49 units#
21p if you buy 500+ (and then flog 'em on for 42p!)

yup, as I said.
Only single walled, but they are almost up to the full allowance, and only after a quick Google, am sure there must be better solutions out there.

Jut had a very instructive visit to my local cardboard box factory (Zetland boxes, York). Got samples of a new 15.5cm cubed box. Attached are a couple of pics that show with 2 10oz BMS mugs in. With a bit of bubble below and above, the mugs are well away from the corners of the box, the place most likely to take impact. Single walled, but pretty strong. Have to say they were very helpful and have some very clever book mailers that are adaptable for different depths too. No, don't have anything to do with them apart from being a happy customer.
