Urgent help needed...vinyl choice!

Hi all,

I've been asked to do a big job of 84 hoodies and vests. The customer wants silver text on the garments.

Ive got silver vinyl from my supplier but its crap! and expensive crap at that - Siser PU Textile Vinyl Im pressing onto cotton hoodies and the lettering is just coming off with the application paper.

The instructions for the vinyl are a joke, it says to press at 150deg for 15 seconds - remove application tape cold.

When I tried this on a test piece the whole lot just came off, nothing stuck to the shirt. So ive gone up through temps and times until i hit 190deg at 35 seconds!!! when the garment cools down i peel away carefully but its still not 100% stuck in places and to be honest ive lost all confidence in the vinyl. Ive wasted 3 hoodies now that i thought wouldve been ok, im not continuing with this as it'll soon eat my profit. The company has already said they'd take it back but as always "no-one else has encountered a problem". I do lots of tshirts and hoodies but this one's got me (i mostly print my own and not use dedicated coloured vinyl). Its as if the vinyl wont release from the application tape.

I desperatly need to get decent silver vinyl, what's everyone else using? or can anyone shed light on why im getting this problem?

The metallic vinyls, when old, do have a nasty habit of delaminating - and you end up with a thin sticky "plasticky" layer on the shirt and the metallic foil remains attached to the carrier sheet - so I suspect you may have some old stock from your supplier!

We have a silver vinyl which is very good - though frankly not the cheapest.

Don't keep trying new garments, use one of the messed up ones to practice on

I get my garment vinyl from Mulberry, and so far, not had any problems with it

Yes i called the supplier and indeed ive got some old stock! They've ackownledged the problem and are sending out the new stuff with new instructions. I might have had the pressure a little high as well because the lady said that at high pressure the adhesive can seep out of the edges and this would cause the problem of letters lifting off.

Kaz, i had done a few on the good garments because i thought the problem had gone, i thought i knew better than to experiment on the good stuff but i honestly thought i'd cracked it...alas no

The new vinyl is on the way...

I always used Xpres for my silver/gold materials and never had any issues with them at all. The Target Transfers range of cad-cut is also excellent. They're are some great new materials available with different effects, camouflage etc.

I use xpres too, having tried, tested, washed and worn tees ourselves with vinyl from various companies (after a bad experience when we first started out) Xpres is who we have decided to stick with. The Ultra cut is great to cut weed n wash and they also give superd tech help when using a different material etc

They sent me some more vinyl today and it worked a treat! Exactly how it should be, nice n easy to peel away after pressing.

Im gonna try and save the 3 hoodies i ruined...

any idea on how to remove semi-pressed vinyl? its not that adehered to the garments and im guessing a little coaxing might remove it.

Any ideas?

Xpres do a transfer removal spray. Depends on the type of vinyl and how aggresive the adhesive was. Sometimes you can get a slight shadow where the adhesive was but you can often cover this up with more vinyl by simply pressing over the top

Xpres do have a spray vinyl remover which is ok but not great, having messed up a few items i sprayed on as instructed but unfortunately it all turned to gummy yuck, try Martins liquid remover in a plastic bottle it works a treat!! Just freezes off!

Word of warning don't sniff it which is exactly what I did despite the don't inhale warning written on the bottle. It'll burn the hairs out o yer conk!

Urrrrmmmm.... what is this? Don't think it comes from us as ours is also a spray.
