Re: Cloud File Storage
Reading the FAQ, I get the impression that Mega is entirely browser-based (not a folder sync tool like many of the other similar services).Stitch Up;65376 wrote:Is it possible to sync a folder from your hard drive to a folder on Mega? The reason I ask is when uploading lots of files overnight, if something halts the process, I'd prefer a way of uploading just the files/folders that didn't make it - not the whole lot again.
Cheers
John
On the subject of interrupted uploads, the FAQ has this to say:
That second question suggests that if you upload the whole folder again, it will skip any that it believes have already been uploaded (based on target path/filename, file size, and last mod time). That should at least make resuming your uploads a lot easier. Can I resume interrupted up- or downloads?
Yes, as long as you do not close the browser tab, up- and downloads will resume automatically after e.g. a network interruption or your device having entered standby/sleep mode. Please note that our servers automatically discard incomplete uploads after 48 hours of inactivity.
Can I upload the same file multiple times?
Because the server can't see filenames, filename collisions have to be dealt with on the client side. With standard settings, if you upload a file that you already seem to have in your account (same target path/filename, same size, same last modification time), it is skipped, but nothing prevents you from keeping multiple files or folders with the same name in the same folder.

Re: Cloud File Storage
I knew it was something like that
My browser (Chrome) was non-responsive this morning so I couldn't resume the upload
There is a setting to ignore duplicate files but, it still seems to take the time to upload them
Maybe I'll try again overnight.

Re: Cloud File Storage
I'm not really looking at it as a replacement for drop box due to the browser only uploading and no sync but it may be useful as a simple online backup.
Re: Cloud File Storage
The more I read of Mega, the less keen I would be to use it.
My concern would be two-fold. (i) Can you be absolutely certain that the checks done are so accurate that those other 99 people don't end up with a personal file that you don't want them to have?, and (ii) if your data is secured on the client-side, how can Mega possibly know if the same file is stored more than once by multiple users? That can only be done if everyone uses the same encryption & key, surely? How can a complete stranger decrypt a file that you've encrypted client-side without your key and password? Doesn't that suggest that it's not as secure or as well-encrypted from the prying eyes of others as Mega maintains it is?
There's also quite a number of times in the T&C where something similar to this is mentioned:
Sounds like Mega might be great for the temporary sharing of non-critical files, but not so great for backups and certainly not for syncing.
This technology, known as de-duplication, is used so that the host doesn't use unnecessary server space. For instance, if 100 people save an ISO of the same Linux distro, Mega only need to store one copy of it and allow those 100 people access to it (saving Mega server space while not saving you cloud space). Sounds reasonable, I guess.8. Our service may automatically delete a piece of data you upload or give someone else access to where it determines that that data is an exact duplicate of original data already on our service. In that case, you will access that original data.

So you could turn around one day and find all your data gone, and Mega wouldn't have to do a thing about it.Mega may “terminate or suspend our services or any part of our services, for all users or for groups of users, at any time and for any reason or no reason.”

Re: Cloud File Storage
mega is perfect for piracy.... as if you have your files that you paid for and very important to you, then you would not want to use this service. if you have pirate files then what would you care???/
I am not big fan of mega service must admit...

Re: Cloud File Storage
Another new one started up by the looks of it:
http://www.sync.us/
Still in Beta, I've registered to give it a go. 5Gb free and they claim they'll be the cheapest and most secure
Up to 20TB for a fraction of the cost of competitors they're claiming.

Re: Cloud File Storage
looks like they use same encryption as mega now.
