Another way you could go is to get someone to make the mugs for you, this takes away the risk from you in terms of extra equipment and wasted stock. Or you could find a company who would print the artwork on their sublimation printer for you, and you just do the pressing to the mugs.
Obviously both these options take away some of the experience from the young people, but it would give you a chance to try the idea out, test the market, and see if it is something you want to put more funds into.
