BT begins 10Gbps (yes, gigabit) broadband trial in Cornwall

jeez - they cant even get the infrastructure they have just now working right, never mind faster speeds
a lot of citys still only have "up to 8meg" .

We moved from zone 2 London where we got about 6 meg, and went to rural County Durham where we now get about 15 meg! We're happy with that on normal ADSL, can't see need for upgrading to fibre.

Well BT upgrades are a joke. My mother lives in rural Wales and got a good adsl connection for years. Then BT tell her they are upgrading the cable and the adsl signal disappears. Complaint to BT with the reply we have upgraded the cable with a new thinner cable and as such the attenuation is greater and you can no longer get adsl in your village!

Needless to say that a few years later the only way to get internet in the village is by a satellite system and the first family to have one installed got a £120 bill for first months usage - so no one else in the village has taken up the offer lol

WDR BT would not have hanged the cable unless it was VERY badly damaged they are more ikely to have changed the equipment in the telephone exchange

I switched from AOL (carried by BT) to Virgin Fibre Optic recently. Changing over was a royal pain in the neck but now it is all up and running I must admit that it is very fast and excellent when there are a few things online and downloading at one time. If you have the option for fibre optic (whoever supplies it) then I would recommend.

my little exchange is to be fibre enabled by summer 2013 :biggrin:.
i have sky LLU @ 16meg down 1meg up just now.

i will take that please. not so much for the download speed, but upload speed.
now if they roll out the new 330meg, but i dought it very much in the next 5 yrs here.

yes there is only so much you can do over a certain speed, then it really becomes a waste, unless you got 4/5 family members on at one time.
for me, i,m addicted to http://speedtest.net lol.....one day i keep saying, mine will go up to 60, maybe even 80meg...wooo ...LMAO, i know i,m sad, but i am a tech.gadget geek after all

you kids got it lucky now - in my day - it took 45 mins to download one 4mb mp3 on dial up.(500k):eek:
then i got ISDN (3/4meg) (first person to get it here in Girvan )....WOW. now the same 4mb mp3 would come down in 20mins .
then came 2004, when the world changed forever - never again would my life be the same. ASDL had arrived.
thought i had died and went to somewhere.
just as i was settling in to ADSL - Another shocker came in 2006 - ADSL MAX .
I had to buy new underpants at that stage..
finally in 2009/10, i got LLU (16meg) - I remember that day well - thats the day i had to sign up to a whole-sale clothing supplier for my steady supply of underpants at a cheaper rate.
God knows what i,m gonna be like when i get "superfast" broadband in wholesale diaper supplier LOL

Well they told my mother that their contractors had replaced all the cable from exchange to village and this was thinner cable with more attenuation. I tried talking to BT but every department blamed another and the upshot was no more ADSL in the village.

I am lucky enough to be in a good cable area and have up to 100 meg down (soon to be 120 meg they tell me - for which I supposedly need a new modem/router). The new modem/router is due this Wednesday - but not sure when the upgrade is due. I do not notice the download speed until I have to use my ADSL connection which is lucky to do 3 meg (and I am only a couple of miles from the exchange). The difference is then amazing. If I push my cable connection hard then I can download a full CD's worth of data in a minute, a complete DVD's in 6 minutes and a 50GB Blu-ray's worth in just over an hour. Luckily for Virgin I do not need that capacity but it does make software updates quick!

I am currently with AOL and we have just been advised by the huge stickers on the new boxes popping up everywhere, that our exchange is one of those upgraded to be able to go down the fibre optics route..

I can't complain about AOL as been with them since the days of going over with Compuserve.. but they allegedly won't be offering fibre optics.. but really wouldn't mind the upgrade in speed
