If you forgot they were ceramic tiles and considered they were infact ceramic mugs you would probably already know the answer.

A tile on a wall is never likely to get anywhere near the wear and tear of a constantly handled and dishwashed mug.

Whether you can sublimate an 8x10 tile will depend on what margin your printer needs when printing an A4 sheet or A3 prints.

No offence mate but have you used or even seen these tiles because that advice is just plain wrong . You are comparing them to ceramic mugs like they are the same as mugs my question woiuld be which mugs? dishwasher proof? ultra brite? cheap ebay mugs?????? mugs vary so much i dont see how you can liken them to any particular mug . I can tell you for definate as i have done a fair few of these the tiles look fantastic when printed but beware as justin pointed out they may fade in direct sunlight but more importantly they are NOT very scratch resistant and great care should be taken when cleaning them especially if using abrasive cleaning fluids or cloths also to suggest they wont get wear and tear like a mug i would also disagree with. I can gaurantee the first thing customers to the resturant will do is say oooo look at the lovely tiles and then feel the surface of the tile this happens all the time in my shop i now have a set of display tiles with nice scratchs ion them from where people have run their hand over the tile their rings scratch the surface hey presto ware n tear

Hi Paul, just wondered if you did do the mural in the end as ive been asked if i can do a 3mtr x 12" one to go behind a big aga and side boards, i was thinking of asking if they would like 8x10 tiles instead of 6x6 ones as i think it would look better but would i get the single tile image on a4 paper with the bleed? and also do you think it would hold up on the wall colour wise being behind the cooker?

The questions I would be asking are: Is there a clear coat that is both UV and food safe. (would clear frog juice be ok)
How close will the tiles be to the heat source and will they be affected by heat and steam.
Is it an actual image or is it text.
There are plenty of image based splash backs out there to buy so it is possible to do, it's just what method of manufacture is used that is as Paul says, Right first time.

sorry. guy changed his mind. never printed them on the end. i printed quite few tiles in m life and i agree with Bret. they do look fantastic.

@purpledragon - no offence taken however yes, I have seen these tiles as to be honest it is the second most popular item I do after mugs and I do not get any issues with scratches etc as you seem to have suffered. Maybe the difference is in the fact that I coat my own tiles with 2 layers of sublimation coat and maybe thats why mine last.

@GoldRapt, From the details the lady sent me tonight along with the picture she drew it will be quite abit up from the aga as she wants it to look like its on a shelf so not really a problem with splashes and other bits. Ive just finished converting the image in corel and working out how many tiles it will take to do then send it on a pdf to her and hopefully get the go ahead im also tempted to do a nice sea view and stick it in the bathroom lol

@Paul Shame really, ive watched a few videos on youtube and the tiles look really good when pressed. I will keep a look out for your new video on them when done:)

@ADP There is somewhere on youtube a conde video (I think) showing how to create a mural with coreldraw and powerclip to get the overlap done automatically. Well worth having a search for.

I agree, deciding what image to create is always the hardest part. But the answer lies in the thread as given by ADP.
Do you remember (I think it was the old Photoshop Logo) of the mermaid on top of the ocean. How about a seaview at dusk with the suns rays in different orange and reds and the blonde mermaid combing here hair whilst resting on a rock?

I have always been drawn to kitchen splashbacks with artwork on the, Reverse painting and gold leaf in reverse on glass have always been my favourite.
I am glad that you have my questions sorted and I look forward to a peek at the finished product. Does one use the tile printi in Corel and print the tiles one by one or all at the same time and cut the backing paper with a knife?

which only goes to reinforce the fact that one item just because it is a similar material can not be assumed that it will work the same for every one , BTW well done im pleased that its not an issue you have well done, if only i had time to go to such extremes as to coat my own twice but i just have so many orders to fill i will just have to carry on buying them ready coated
