Sorted. It needed to be selected as a 'greyscale' image in the powerdriver setting. I had only tried it by setting greyscale in the paint shop pro and it hadnt effected it. Also, using the old Epson 1400 before the images came out fine without setting greyscale so didnt bother with the new Ricoh printer.

The same problem happened with me..I'll suggest you to print 1-2 sheets again so that it comes back in its normal form...Cleaning won't help much:(
