Re: brother 5910dw pigment inks

Post by bigj2552 »

While waiting for paul for my profile for this other brother printer...
i have noticed an ongoing problem with the pigment inks.

if i leave it without printing any longer than 1 day, the print comes out really faded, and a lot of banding...
tryed to print out some letter headed paper for myself tonight, not a hope in hell

i dont want to have keep cleaning the heads every 2 days just so i can print....not good for the printer anyway that amount of cleaning...will only lead to more problems later ...
so...
houston we got a problem....

this is the printer i will be using for my T-shirt transfers and the odd bit of paper work.....i can see this being a major issue.
The ordinary inks never done this but, obviously these inks are thicker, but in saying that, my other 591dw printer with the sub inks in it, i can leave for days and go back to print and its fine

dont want to bugger up this brother printer...kinda fond of it ....
so thinking i might buy another printer just for the t-shirt transfers and keep the other 5910dw for my own printing use...

or am i gonna have the same issues with a new epson as well with pigment inks ????

what you guys think ?

It's the thickness of the ink. I get it sometimes with the dye-sub ink, but it's worse with the pigment.

At the moment, the only Brother I have available for use with regular inks is my ageing DCP-195C which I trialled with pigment ink. As it's getting on a bit, it doesn't have much left on its "waste ink counter", so I don't want to continue having to use the headclean function to pull the ink through every time I start a print run (that headclean does solve the problem for the duration of the run, but it's not a permanent fix - the thick ink pulls back when the printer is idle).

With this in mind, I recently grabbed another tenner or so's worth of regular dye ink and put that in the printer. I didn't flush it this time, so it took a while to get it flowing right but now it's all okay. That's my everyday office printer for the time being because, with regular dye ink, no headcleans are necessary.

I've put my pigments to one side (all except my magenta which leaked a bit from the cartridge - my own fault for being too lazy with it!), and I shall probably use them one day in an Epson or another Brother printer further down the line.

In short - it can work and, if there was an easy way to fit an external waste tank, I would still be using the pigments. Out of necessity for using the printer for daily office tasks, though, I've just swapped back to dye ink.

We learn by doing.

this is my worry ....that the constant head cleans fills up the waste tank...and it will if i have to do it with every print job....
think i will go up to pc world sunday and buy an epson just for the pigment inks....

and your right...one fresh head clean solves it.....but i cant sustain that for the sake of the printers health

the joys bud eh

I'll be interested to know how you get on. I suspect the Epsons might be the same, although the smaller cartridges with ink on top of the printhead might alleviate the issue somewhat.

Well saves me the hassle of putting pigment ink into my brother - I wonder though if the pigment inks that say for Brother are maybe slightly thinner to begin with? I do have a S22 and refillable cartridges spare if thats a better bet.

that WAS pigment inks supposed to be for the brother printer :frown:.

had to try it once.....but no way i can keep doing a head clean every print job.
epson s22 all out stock in main stores .....need to buy new on ebay....

really dont want to bugger up this other brother......had a look for a waste tank, or waste toner bottles as brother call them....cant see any to fit the 5910dw, so i aint taking the chance. YES i got a 3yr unlimited warranty but thats not the point.

as for the S22....give me 3/4days and i will tell you

Waste toner bottles will be for laser printers. Desktop inkjets typically don't have removable waste ink bottles (although I think the new Epson WF printers do). Normally you have to install a waste bottle yourself. I've done this for one of my Epson 1400s, but don't know what's involved for a Brother.

If you end up having to do frequent headcleans with an Epson, you'll invariably find yourself forever replacing the tiny thimble sized cartridges. (Although, again, the new WF range seems to use larger cartridges.)
