photo shop snags

I have just brought some images, he has apple pc and uses photo shop, the images are burnt on a cd in layers in psd format but they won't open in my lap top using photo shop. can anybody advice me, it just says its in the wrong format.

I've also had that problem, it depends what version of photoshop was used on that mac and what one you're sing on pc. Tiff's transfer better than psd. I have both a mac and a pc so I'll try afew things tomorrow and get back to you.

Have you tried GIMP? That can open an uncanny number of different formats (including some PSDs).

It's a free app from www.gimp.org (although I use the non-install "portable" version off an SD card from http://portableapps.com/apps/graphics_pictures/gimp_portable).

As it's free, it can't hurt to try.

yep. I am with JSR! I always recomend it to some customer who dont have photoshop but aish to use my templates. GIMP is working fine and is very powerfull tool. need couple of hours to get use to it but as with everything....

I'd like to use it more and as my primary graphics app but, when I'm in a rush, I invariable go back to something I'm more familiar with. I'm sure I'll get more used to the GIMP one day...

One of the chief advantages of GIMP is that, if and when you do get familiar with it, it's cross-platform - meaning that if you later decide to use a different OS (Mac, Linux, whatever), there's a good chance there'll be a version of GIMP for it. So it is worth spending time on.

haha. I spended hours to work out how to work with layers but now is stright forward and you right in this one. if you change your platform there is good chance to find gimp for that.

I noticed that myself. I'm sure it's only temporary.

If you want to have a play, try the Portable version. In case you're unaware, the portable version is exactly the same as the "normal" version just with a portable wrapper so that it doesn't need to be installed.

PortableApps are a way of using apps without installing to your system and without leaving any identifying information behind (like registry entries).

If you don't like it, you just delete the folder - there's nothing to uninstall. It can't leave rubbish on your system slowing it down after an uninstall, because it wasn't installed in the first place.

You download an exe file from the link on PortableApps, and it then unpacks to your chosen location. In my case, I use an SD card but it can be anywhere - from a USB stick to a folder on you C: drive. Once unpacked, you can even burn it to a CD and run it from there! The flexibility you get with portableapps is really quite liberating.

(There are other sources of PortableApps, but not all of them have the same strict policy of the site I linked to and they may not clean up after themselves in the same way PortableApps do.)
