I'm no lawyer, but my understanding on the subject is that there are three areas that cover design - copyright, trademark and passing off.
Copyright relates to an image, graphic or photo and creative works involving words - you can't place a copyright on words unless they are part of a creative piece - http://www.ipo.gov.uk/types/copy/c-appl ... iginal.htm
Trademark relates to words incorporated into or form part of a design/logo or a graphic/design on its own - http://www.ipo.gov.uk/types/tm.htm
Passing Off - you create a logo or design which is similar to a registered trademark with the full intention of trying to profit from it - http://www.duport.co.uk/advisor/legal/i ... ng-off.php - this is probably where "London 2012" would fall into.
Then for 2012 there is the special London Olympic Games Act 2006 - http://www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/2006/12/schedule/3.

Safest way Charlie, but be prepared to fire off those "breach of copyright" & "passing off" letters to those who copy your designs
