Icc profile and gimp

Ok here goes! I have loaded the icc from sawgrass installed ok on iMac. Just don't know what else to do with it? I am using gimp so how do I use it when I want to print something. Also I have photoshop on the iMac but it's sooo complicated that I just loaded gimp instead! I'm looking for tutorials but am not sure what versions of photoshop it is. Will upload a picture later....
The other thing I can't get my head round is the calibrating monitor what and why do I need to do it if I have the icc to correct colours?

Not sure about Gimp, but if you go to the sawgrass website (www.sawgrasseurope.com) and go to the technical section you can download instructions on configuring your version of Photoshop.

You calibrate the monitor so that it closer matches the actual printout but most folk probably don't bother doing this. You'd need a Spider....Munki...or other calibration device

dont bother with gimp. wont work well with icc.
and if you compare GIMP to photoshop then photoshop is simple to use

You're confusing the ideas behind ICCs. Basically each piece of visual equipment in your computer system (scanner, monitor, printer) uses an ICC to calibrate its colours, so ideally they are all as close to being the same as possible, so in theory you scan something in, and it looks the same on your monitor, and prints out the same as the original. So, the Sawgrass ICC is to calibrate your printer/inks, but has nothing to do with calibrating your monitor. Bare in mind, that if you have loaded the proper drivers for your monitor, the it likely has a generic ICC loaded already. If you really want to get into things, then you should have a custom profile made for your inks, and a custom profile done for your monitor, or buy the kit and do it yourself.

Thanks guys!! I will explore sawgrass site further and post a pic of programmes on the iMac so I know for sure which programmes I have and are best to use.... Well Paul you are a photoshop expert so I won't bother with gimp. Better to get started with a decent programme that I know will do everything I needed it to just a little learning on my side right?!! A little learning sounds easier said! Becki that's so sweet of you to offer support! Although I don't mind paying , it's better to learn from someone already in the business than struggle for hours if you're tight on time and with 3 boys off school I most certainly am!!

I find the easiest programme for printing with ICC profiles is QImage: http://www.ddisoftware.com/qimage/

It's page-layout/printing software, not graphics creation as such (although you can tweak colours, etc). Once I have my images ready, I lay them out in Qimage to print. Qimage doesn't alter the image file (it saves tweaks in filter files). When laid out, I just save the job so it's easy to retrieve and reprint again later.

I do have an old version of Photoshop Elements, but the layout and printing side of things leaves a lot to be desired.
