This is true. However, you can use a flash if you're a bit clever. Put the camera on a tripod some distance away from the mug, angle and turn the camera so that the mug is to one side or in one corner of the picture. Now let the flash fire. There's a good chance that you'll get a picture without the hot spot because, if the mug isn't in the middle of the picture and is not flat on, then the reflection from the flash doesn't go straight back into the camera lens.
Daylight is still preferable, of course, but there's precious little of that when you're taking photos during the winter months...
