Re: ciss... really that bad?

Post by gavtheoldskater »

i'm just about to buy a new epson b1100 to run sublimation ink and was all set to use a ciss system (good quality one not ebay special) but trawling through threads quite a few folk seem to have issues with them.

i already have refillable cartridges in my current b1100 and although a faff they work ok, so i was hoping ciss would be simpler. but if its going to be a headache i'll save a few quid and stick with what i know.

anyone have any advice?

Ciss is great when its work ok. But when it goes bad then you pray about refillables back :-)
Some decent ciss on ebay btw...

I think that's your answer :-) I've certainly had zero problems since ditching CIS in favour of refil carts.

Paul's summary is right. When a CISS works, it's great. You do have to put up with the tubes flapping about and not lifting the bottles too high or too low.

Refillables are only a faff because Epson printers take cartridges that hold barely a thimble's worth of ink. One sniff and they're empty. I've had some problems with refillables in Epson printers, mainly when taking empty ones out and putting full ones back in their place, but that might be solved by refilling them in situ.

The solution would be to use a printer that takes larger refillables so that you don't have the faff of a CISS and you're not constantly refilling the thimble-sized cartridges. Unfortunately, the "supported" path doesn't include any such printer.

And if they're pre-filled cartridges, it'll be another excuse for Sawgrass to target their prices at the "pay your mortgage or buy a cartridge" market...

350ml per cartridge times 4 or 6 per inkset is "sell your car" prices when Sawgrass price them up.

They will be prefilled, but at the price then it will be cheaper to buy the prefilled cartridges rather than the ink to fill them!
