Re: Inner coating on mugs
I know that usually the emphasis is on the outer coatings on mugs but I live in a really hard water area - no public water supply outside of the main town system - so most people have wells or private schemes. I've made myself a few mugs and while the outsides are holding up well, the insides are very badly stained and even when sterilised the insides are marked. Seems like the inner coatings are pitted and are not very well glazed - although I have a couple of mugs that seem to have a better inner finish - none are comparitive to a diamond glaze type coating.
Anyone know who has those smooth crystal inner coated mugs - or is that they use the same coating inside and out?

Oh - I used to buy the greenware mugs and underglazed the outside and then would glaze the outside and then roll glaze the inside with diamond glaze.... thought commercial mugs where done the same but maybe dipped.logobear;42210 wrote:only coated outside......

Re: Inner coating on mugs
i have had this elgrande mugs, they are awful, and the customer is having to soak them in bleach, when you feel them they are not that smooth at all, i wonder if some of the manufacturers are concentrating too much on the outside and the inside is suffering

I had the same thing with the Bone China mugs when a customer told me that the person they'd gifted it to was upset that it stained on the inside. When I mentioned that it could be put in a dishwasher, they said that they didn't have a dishwasher.
So while everyone's concentrating on the dishwasher-safe properties of these mugs, we're all forgetting about those who don't have dishwashers.
Oddly, the non-dishwasher colour-change mug I use here every day has a nice smooth white inner. It's dead easy to clean and doesn't stain. It must be possible to have all other mugs made like this.

Re: Inner coating on mugs
Just a thought on this problem. Could it be that it has been like this for years? If you look at places where sub mugs are commonly in use....garages for instance where spares/tools suppliers etc use them to promote their business and the mugs get used in a mucky environment. Yes I know back street garages are notoriously 'lax' in dishwashing but their mugs seem to stain very quickly. If you then compare the 'stain-ability' of non sub mugs in a similar environment and I think you'll see that yes they stain eventually but nowhere as easily.......so maybe it's just the production of sub mugs that makes this problem more prevalent and has done for years.

Re: Inner coating on mugs
I wash mine both by hand and dishwasher - have to really scrub the insides and after a couple of months they look terrible. Now it's ok for novelty or giveaway mugs but I had wanted to do a set of four as a gift for someone and tbh I wouldn't want to put my name to them as a gift. Just wondered if there were smoother inners out there!mrs maggot;42254 wrote:place mine have gone to wash by hand as well so cant blame the dishwasher
Re: Inner coating on mugs
I have noticed quite a variance of the inner quality on mugs. The standard 11oz i have used tended to almost look a bit yellowy on the inside.. not the bright white of the outer coating, and with a smooth matt feel. But the smaller espresso ones are glossy white all over. A few places do mugs that are extra white ? Seen them at BMS and others. Anyone know what these are ?
Re: Inner coating on mugs
We've recently discovered this, and it's a bit embarrassing to have friends who've had mugs as gifts (but don't have dishwashers) say that their mugs are awfully stained after a few weeks - not sure what customers who've paid quite a bit per mug must think. The mugs we've knocked up ourselves as samples are fine as we use a dishwasher. Majority of our mugs are BMS' Europeans.
